Red Oak is one of the most popular flooring hardwoods in North America and is revered for its warm, pink hues and versatility. The timber grows along the entire East coast from the Southern States up into the wilds of Quebec. English Timbers imports this hardwood from the Northern Appalachians where the finest timber is grown. This beautiful red oak flooring has a bold figure and the colour varies from cream to light red-brown with an overall pink blush.

When the early settlers moved into America, they used the native White Oak for much of their carpentry and flooring. It is the most versatile of timbers being, tough, durable and beautiful. Our White Oak flooring is made from carefully selected hardwood from the north of the continent where the colour is reasonably uniform but with subtle variations. This 128mm wide plank floor displays the long sweeping grain of White Oak to its best advantage in the wider board. The name 'White Oak' should not be taken as a guide to the colour of the timber; it is as described below. Overall the timber has a slightly warmer tone than the European Oak.
An attractive traditional plank floor which is mostly honey brown in colour but with occasional, pink hues and variations in texture. The timber is straight grained with a pleasing figure and there may be an odd small pin knot and flash of darker or lighter colour.

Walnut needs little introduction. The wood is prized for its beautiful colour and figure and is used for classical cabinet making, quality gun stocks and musical instruments. This timber has strength and resilience and during the war years it was used for many of the propellers on allied aircraft. These properties combined with its beauty make it an ideal hardwood for an exotic floor. The timber used to make our walnut floors is steamed to darken the wood and produce a more uniform colour. The heartwood is light to dark brown with hues of gunmetal and purple and the wood is beautifully figured. The sapwood is normally cream to light brown if steamed but can be white.
This is virtually a clear grade of floor but is selected for figure and colour. The timber may contain small pin knots, a few burrs and the occasional sound closed knot provided that it blends well with the overall appearance of the wood. The overal colour of the floor varies from medium to dark chocolate brown with shades of purple, blue and light brown. White sapwood is excluded but the darker steamed sapwood is permitted and there may be occasional flashes of very dark brown, cream and some light brown stripes.
This is a rich bold floor with wide colour variation from ivory to dark brow. The flooring may contain frequent knots and light rustic features which may require some filling. Light sapwood is permitted in this floor. Rustic grade flooring may be available - please see the price list and special offers. American Cherry is a beautiful wood with a texture, warm tones of amber and pink and a close smooth grain. When first laid the colour of the floor is a pastel pink, but this darkens with time to a rich deep auburn. This hardwood is much sought after for fine furniture and musical instrument making. The premier timber is found in the northern states such as Pensylvania and New York State where the colour is rich and uniform and the amount of gum is minimal. All our timber is bought from these areas. Gum is a normal feature of all American Cherry and shows as lines or areas of dark brown. It occurs in all our grades of flooring, but is minimised in the Classic grade.
The floor is reasonably uniform in colour - from pale pink to mid amber with the odd flash of cream and, while mostly clear, may contain a few pin knots, perhaps a little light burr and limited brown gum lines. This truly is a connoisseur's floor.

Jatoba is a beautiful rich, dark South American hardwood which is used for fine cabinet making and flooring. The colour is a blaze of burnt amber and russet. The grain is a subtle blend of straight and flowery patterns with darker veins and stripes. English Timbers have chosen Jatoba, not only for its beauty, but also because of its exceptional durability and hardness. In fact Jatoba is about twice as hard as Maple and is one of the most durable floors available today.
A rich, hard timber with a bold grain and an occasional small pin knot. The colour of the floor varies from a warm auburn to mid-brown and darkens with age.
American Elm is a bold colourful hardwood which makes a ideal country floor. We have introduced the 128mm wide plank and mixed the Character and Classic grades to make a beautiful natural floor. The colour for the most part, is a rich red/brown with variations from light to dark brown, flashes of cream and subtle hues of green and red. The King of all Oaks, English Oak has been used for generations for building the strongest ships and adorning the finest houses. Most of our English Oak Oak is from Cumbria where the unique climate and geology produce wonderful variations in grain, texture and colour and small pin knots and burrs are an attractive and acceptable part of its appearance. These variations give our English Oak flooring a particular identity and character which separates it from the European and American Oak floors. Slow growth and limited managed output from these Cumbrian forests means we only produce a small quantity of this beautiful flooring.
Our European Oak is selected from the north where the maritime climate produces similar charcateristics to our English Oak. It may be a little paler in colour and straighter grained, but is more abundant because of the large tracts of managed forests. In essence the grades are similar for both Oaks, but the appearance of the European may be a little different as described above.
Selected for its fine figure & honey brown colour. The wood displays all the beauty and character of northern Oak and may contain isolated or clusters of small live pin knots and a very small amount of lighter, creamy coloured timber. A truly classic floor.
Carefully selected flooring for those who prefer more variation and features without the boldness of a Rustic Grade. This grade of floor contains a scattering of sound knots, an odd small dark knot and colour variation from cream to mid brown. A vibrant, colourful floor.
The most rugged of the floors with wide colour variation from cream to dark brown, wild grain, unlimited knots of all sizes & colours and other rustic features. A bold country floor produced in small quantities.
Hard Maple is one of the most versatile floors in our range. The wood has long been used for flooring because of its close grained texture, strength and lustrous beauty. The best timber is harvested in the northern states, where the whitest Maple is found, and is carefully selected to make our four grades of solid flooring. The outer part of the tree produces the whitest timber and this is used to make the Ivory & Honey grades of flooring, the inner boards contain the darker heartwood and the more knotty timber and this makes the Smoky and Rustic grades. Small flashes and lines of darker timber ( mineral colour ) occur in all the grades but this is limited according to the grade of floor. These maple floors are graded in order of increasing colour variation, darkness of wood and frequency and size of knots with the highest grade being the white or Ivory maple.
A stunning white to cream plank floor which has been selected for its uniform lightness and minimal appearance. This is a clear grade of flooring except for an odd light pin knot, occasional flashes of darker mineral colour which is limited so as not to mar the overall appearance.
A lovely light floor with more colour and grain variation than the Ivory. It is white to dark cream with areas of light amber and occasional larger flashes of mineral colour and the odd pin knot.
A striking, bold plank floor with colour variation from white to dark brown and all shades between. The name is derived from the swirling brown grain and the dark veins of mineral colour in some of the wood. There may be a few small knots an odd surface shake and character marks.
Another bold floor but with plenty of rustic features. The colour of the timber varies from white to dark brown and typical rustic features are unlimited knots, some of which need filling, some non structural cracks, the occasional small hole and odd machining defects.
Our Ash is grown in the northern states and along the Canadian border where it is strong and durable. It was chosen by the early settlers for its simple beauty and versatility and their shaker furniture made from Ash remains a classic to this day. The floors are graded into Classic White Ash, Classic Olive Ash ,Character Ash and a little Rustic Ash for maximum choice. The beautiful figure and light colour create a lively sense of space in all seasons. The colour of the wood varies from almost pure white to chocolate brown and the flooring is graded accordingly.

This is also a clear grade except for a few pin knots. The main feature of this floor is the wide colour variation from white to dark chocolate brown and occasional purple hues. Individual boards may be all brown or mostly white with a small proportion of olive colour and batches may vary with a dark or light bias.
This has a slightly rustic appearance and contains a few sound live knots up to 30mm in diameter, burrs and an odd smaller dark knot. The wide colour variation from white to dark brown, wild grain and knots combine to produce an attractive floor.
Rustic ash is produced in small quantities. The grade may contain wide colour variation of white to dark brown, numerous knots, occasional surface cracks, some machining defects and other rustic features. The average length is much shorter.
To compliment our range of solid un-finished floors we have had made for us a small range of 15mm thick solid overlays. These floors are available in solid Kempas, Merbau and Bamboo and finished with several coats of hardwearing lacquer. The flooring is exceptionally well machined & finished and has a very small bevel to the sides and ends. The Bamboo is supplied in extra long lengths of 1.84m. The Kempas and Merbau are in fixed in lengths of 1.82m. which are made up of shorter boards finger jointed together to make the fixed lengths. The Bamboo is not finger jointed. Each piece of overlay flooring is fully sealed and can be fixed to a timber or plywood/chipboard sub floor by secret nailing. Because they are overlays, they should always be fixed to a fully supported sub floor. These floors are excellent value for money and replace all our engineered boards, which have now been discontinued. All these floors may also be used as decorative wall cladding where appropriate.
This is a dense hardwearing wood and is virtually clear of all knots. The colour of the wood varies from cream to a warm mid brown with occasional flashes of darker colour. Similar in overall colour to American Cherry.
Width 90mm, Thickness 15mm, Lengths all 1.82m ( Finger jointed). Supplied in packs of 1.966 square metres.
Also a very hard and dense wood, with a very occasional small knot. The colour of the timber varies mostly from a mid red/brown to yellow/brown with occasional lighter and darker coloured boards. Small yellow flecks in the grain are a common feature of the wood.
Width 90mm, Thickness 15mm, Lengths all 1.82m ( Finger jointed). Supplied in packs of 1.966 square metres.
Each section of flooring is made from small sections of Bamboo which are bonded together before machining. This gives the material exceptional stability. The colour is a uniform cream yellow with regular patterns of small knots. The Bamboo (Also Kempas & Merbau) may be used as a superb light wall and ceiling cladding as the micro bevel accentuates the line and the pre-finishing eliminates the need for sanding and finishing.
Width 95mm, Length 1.84m - extra long. Thickness 15mm. Supplied in packs of 2.098 square metres.
Long before the advent of sawmills and machines, figured or quartered oak boards were widely used in flooring because of their stability and beauty. In those days, trees would be cut with a pit saw and the boards left to dry for a few months or laid directly to joists. The main floor boards were cut near the centre of tree and contained the heart, shakes, knots and all and some of these boards displayed the beautiful silver figure which is so typical of this era. English Timbers have recreated this look with their Rustic Oak Boards by choosing timber which most closely matches the original character of these old floors The boards are supplied in a width of 200mm and random lengths. They are lightly bevelled on all four sides and filled and sanded which makes for easy installation. The floor illustrated above has been limed to lighten the timber, but a variety of finishes may be used to create different effects.
Because of the longer lengths and the proximity of the heart of the tree it is difficult to exactly define the grade of the floor. Some, but not all of the floor will contain the silver quarter sawn figure. Boards may contain some or all of the following features:-Knots, cracked knots, burrs, colour variation, heart and some heart shake, occasional cracks and holes. There are no limits to the size of the features provided the boards are structurally sound. Boards are normally supplied filled, sanded and with a bevelled edge on all four sides.
Sizes:- The width of boards are normally 200mm. Thickness is normally 20mm. Lengths are 1.4m and longer with a small percentage down to 800mm.
We also produce a Character Board floor with a scattering of sound knots. This is supplied without a bevel and is not filled or sanded. With the exception of the smaller knots, the floor is much clearer than the Rustic floor and is mostly free from cracks of other features. Colour is mostly light to mid brown with occasional lighter or darker hues. Width and length are the same as the Rustic Board. While some of the boards are figured, there are less of these boards than in the Rustic Board.
